New evidence has revealed that koalas may be extinct on the New South Wales far south coast.
The first stage of a study looking at the animals in the Eurobodalla has recorded only one koala being spotted since the research began at the start of 2012.

Koalas are in serious decline suffering from the effects of habitat destruction, domestic dog attacks, bushfires and road accidents. The Australian Koala Foundation estimates that there are less than 80,000 Koalas left in the wild, possibly as few as 43,000.
Unfortunately, Koalas on mainland Victoria face the same problems as those inhabiting other parts of Australia (eg habitat destruction, deterioration, fragmentation, dog attacks, road deaths etc)
THE Australian Koala Foundation has estimated there could be as few as 1000 koalas remaining on the Sunshine Coast and near Gympie.
The foundation recently identified how many koalas were left in each federal electorate, and the seats covering the Coast were especially dire
